Uterine glomeruloid hemangioma in a patient without POEMS syndrome.
2011
Cutaneous glomeruloid hemangioma is a hallmark of POEMS syndrome. These patients have elevated serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor. The authors report an extracutaneous uterine glomeruloid hemangioma in an 82-year-old woman with a history of breast and endometrial carcinomas. Within the lumen of myometrial vessels, a lobular, glomeruloid proliferation of capillary-like CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1-positive endothelial cells was found. The capillary loops were lined by endothelial cells, most of them containing PAS-positive and immunoglobulin-positive eosinophilic hyaline globules (thanatosomes). This vascular proliferation was consistent with a glom…
Microcystic pseudoglandular plexiform cutaneous neurofibroma
2015
Glandular structures are well documented to appear in peripheral nerve sheath tumors. These epithelial elements are usually present in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors although a few cases of glandular benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors have also been described, most of them being schwannomas. A neurofibroma with glands is considered to be a rare type of divergent differentiation, but a neurofibroma containing gland-like or pseudoglandular structures have not, to our knowledge, been described. We report a 33-year-old patient with a well-demarcated dermal neoplasm, composed of neoplastic Schwann cells, perineurial-like cells and fibroblasts in a matrix with collagen fibers and myx…
Development of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Is Decreased in Mice with Plasma Phospholipid Transfer Protein Deficiency
2013
International audience; Plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) increases the circulating levels of proatherogenic lipoproteins, accelerates blood coagulation, and modulates inflammation. The role of PLTP in the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) was investigated by using either a combination of mechanical and elastase injury at one site of mouse aorta (elastase model) or continuous infusion of angiotensin II in hyperlipidemic ApoE-knockout mice (Ang II model). With the elastase model, complete PLTP deficiency was associated with a significantly lower incidence and a lesser degree of AAA expansion. With the Ang II model, findings were consistent with those in the elastase mo…
Characterization of T–cell subclasses and NK–cells in lysosomal disorders by immuno–electron microscopy
1994
Previous studies have shown that B and T lymphocytes are affected in lysosomal disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of subclasses of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells in lysosomal diseases. CD4+, CD8+, and CD56+ cells were immunomagnetically separated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 10 patients with various lysosomal diseases--including one patient each with infantile, late infantile, and juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipfuscinoses, two patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I and four patients with MPS type III, and one patient with mucolipidosis type II; all lymphocytes were studied by light and electron microscopy. Respective vacuolar or …
A new model of chronic colitis in SCID mice induced by adoptive transfer of CD62L+ CD4+ T cells: insights into the regulatory role of interleukin-6 o…
2003
Objective: The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 is involved in various chronic inflammatory processes. IL-6 is a predominant cytokine produced by lamina propria T cells in Crohn’s disease and experimental colitis. This study was designed to examine the effect of a neutralizing IL-6-receptor (IL-6R) antibody on the programmed cell death of mucosal T cells in the CD62L+ CD4+ SCID transfer model of chronic experimental colitis in mice and to gain more insight into the pathogenesis of this transfer colitis model. Methods: For adoptive transfer, we isolated CD62L+ CD4+ double-positive T cells from wild-type BALB/c mice followed by intraperitoneal …

Anomalous occurrence of immunoreactive calcitonin cells in the thymus of the rat.
1982
In a study of the effect of pinealectomy on thyroid C-cell number, 8 animals out of 66 were found to have thymic tissue in close association with the thyroid. Cells containing immunoreactive calcitonin were found in all of the thyroids but in only one of the 8 pieces of thymus. These cells found in a piece of thymic tissue associated with the right thyroid lobe were located immediately under the capsule and did not form or associate with follicles. Unlike the other animals the rat with thymic calcitonin cells had an unequal distribution of C-cells between the left and right thyroid lobes, but the total number of thyroidal C-cells was the same as that of the other rats. Since the thymus prop…
Mature teratoma of the uterine corpus with thyroid differentiation
2000
A case of a clinically silent mature teratoma of the uterine corpus is reported. A 55-year-old woman presented with multiple uterine leiomyomas. The discovery was incidental, because the patient was asymptomatic. Macroscopically, a colloid-hemorrhagic-looking nodule was present. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies showed that this tumor was a small thyroid mass. Key words:,
A biphasic calcium phosphate coating for potential drug delivery affects early osseointegration of titanium implants.
2016
Background Calcium phosphate (CaP) surface coatings may accelerate osseointegration and serve as a drug delivery system for mineral-binding biomolecules. In a pilot study, the impact of a commercially available, thin CaP coating on early osseous bone remodeling was compared with a modern, subtractive-treated rough surface (SLA-like) in an animal trial. Methods In 16 rabbits, 32 endosseous implants (CaP; n = 16, SLA-like; n = 16) were bilaterally inserted in the proximal tibia after randomization. After 2 and 4 weeks, bone-implant contact (BIC;%) in the cortical (cBIC) and the trabecular bone (sBIC) as well as volume of bone within the screw thread with the highest amount of new-formed bone …
